Guiding Principles in Financial Therapy: Exploring Your Money Story with Purpose

When clients come to therapy to better understand their financial lives—whether they’re facing stress about spending, shame about debt, or uncertainty about how to make financial decisions—they’re often looking for more than just “money tips.” They want to explore what money means to them. They’re searching for insight, healing, and a way to live in alignment with their values. Financial therapy helps them in this exploration.

In my work, I use a practical and grounded approach to help clients explore their financial philosophy—how they relate to money, what shaped that relationship, and how they want it to evolve. I’ve found that certain guiding principles consistently shape this work. Inspired in part by frameworks like WDEGTI (Wonder, Discernment, Enablement, Galvanizing, Tenacity, Invention) and traits helpful for business ownership, these values help me support clients in a thoughtful and empowering way, often integrating insights from financial therapy.

✨ Wonder & Curiosity

We begin by approaching your money story with openness—not judgment. I invite you to explore where your beliefs and behaviors around money come from, and what messages you’ve absorbed over time. This is often where real clarity begins when engaging in a financial therapy process.

🔍 Discernment

As we sort through your financial thoughts and emotions, we’ll work together to identify your core values. Discernment helps us separate the noise from the truth—what matters to you, not what the culture, your family, or others may have told you about money. This discernment is a vital part of financial therapy.

💡 Enablement

You deserve to feel capable and in control when it comes to your finances. My goal is to help you make thoughtful, values-based decisions—ones that reflect who you are and where you’re going. Through financial therapy, this enablement becomes achievable.

🔨 Tenacity

Unlearning unhelpful money patterns takes patience and persistence. You may feel overwhelmed, discouraged, or even defeated at times. But with the right support in financial therapy, you can stay the course and make lasting changes.

⚙️ Invention & Simplicity

Sometimes we need to get creative to find solutions that work. Often, the best approach is also the simplest one. Together, we’ll experiment with strategies that suit your lifestyle—and adjust as we go. Trial and error is part of the process, which is encouraged during financial therapy.

💪 Resilience

Talking about money often stirs up complex feelings: shame, anxiety, regret, even grief. That’s okay. I’ll support you in building emotional resilience so you can stay present and empowered as we work through these moments in financial therapy.

Bringing it Together
My approach to financial therapy isn’t about budgets and spreadsheets (although we can go there if it helps!). It’s about helping you develop a meaningful, sustainable relationship with money—one rooted in awareness, values, and choice. This therapeutic approach shapes a more holistic financial understanding.

If you’re ready to rethink your money story and move toward a more confident, aligned future, I’m here to help.
