Physical Release
- The Wet Dog Shake: Stand up and vigorously shake your hands, arms, legs, and torso for 30 seconds. Imagine you are a dog shaking off water after a swim. This helps discharge physical energy and resets the nervous system.
- The Silent Scream: Open your mouth as wide as possible and scream with all your intensity, but make absolutely no sound. This engages the facial and neck muscles to release frustration without creating noise.
- The Noodle Dance: Put on a song and dance as if you have no bones. Flail your arms and legs loosely rather than trying to look cool. It is difficult to maintain physical tension while moving this loosely.
- The Superman Pose: Stand with your feet wider than your shoulders, hands on your hips, chest puffed out, and chin up. Hold this for two minutes. This posture can lower cortisol and increase feelings of confidence.
Vocal and Facial Play
- Horse Lips: Relax your lips completely and blow air through them so they flap and make a vibrating, sputtering sound. This effectively relaxes the jaw, a common place for holding stress.
- The Primal Grunt: Let out a low, guttural groan or hum that vibrates in your chest. Focusing on the vibration can be grounding and helps release pent-up energy.
- Extreme Face Scrunch: Squeeze your eyes shut, wrinkle your nose, purse your lips, and clench your jaw as hard as you can for five seconds. Then, suddenly release everything and feel the muscles relax.
- Narrate in an Accent: Narrate your current stressful situation out loud using a terrible accent (e.g., a bad pirate, a sophisticated aristocrat, or a cowboy). This forces you to detach from the seriousness of the problem.
Mental and Sensory Shifts
- Wrong Hand Writing: Write a sentence about what is stressing you out using your non-dominant hand. The concentration required and the messy, child-like result can break the loop of stressful rumination.
- Cold Water Shock: Splash freezing cold water on your face or run your wrists under cold water. This triggers the mammalian dive reflex, which can instantly slow down your heart rate and cool your body.
- The “Potato” Visualization: Look at the person or object causing you stress and mentally replace them with a large potato. Reducing the stressor to a harmless vegetable helps lower the perceived threat level.
