What to Expect in Your First Sex Therapy Session

Welcome!

Starting AASECT Certified sex therapy with an AASECT Certified Therapist can feel like a big step, and it’s completely normal to feel a bit nervous. Whether you’re coming in as an individual or as part of a couple, knowing what to expect from an AASECT Certified Therapist can help ease some of that anxiety and help you feel more prepared.

A Safe and Judgment-Free Space

My role as an AASECT Certified Therapist is to create a welcoming, shame-free environment. Sex therapy isn’t about being judged or diagnosed—it’s about having a space to talk openly, explore concerns, improve communication, and learn new ways of thinking and relating.

Discussing Goals and Concerns

In our first session, we’ll talk about what brought you to therapy. Common topics include low desire, mismatched libido, sexual anxiety, questions about orientation, pain during sex, or even just wanting to improve an already satisfying sex life. You set the pace—nothing is off-limits, and nothing has to be rushed. Working with an AASECT Certified Therapist ensures a professional and comforting experience.

You’ll never be asked to do anything sexual in session. All discussions are verbal, and I’ll regularly check in with you to make sure everything feels comfortable. You’re in control the entire time. Many people feel more comfortable with online therapy in this setting.

Education and Support

You can expect to leave with some insight or strategies—even from the very first session with your AASECT Certified Therapist. We might talk about anatomy, communication tools, relationship patterns, or common myths that need busting. Over time, we’ll work together toward the goals that matter most to you.

I hope to work with you soon!
